2. I think a cool place would be in the art room. There are lots of opportunities for a cool shot in there.

3. I think in my photo, I will change positions and depths of frame. It'd be cool if I changed sizes.

4. Something that doesn't move. Something plain as to not take away from the coolness of the photo.

warm up

1. My favorite photo is the first panorama that is shown. Its the one of the beach with the surfer in the right of the frame.

2. These images look like they could have been taken on a really nice camera. It doesn't look like they were taken on a phone.

3. I think the apps if any did indeed help the photos look better, but I don't think it affected them that much.

4. Two tips for my own phone photography:

- creative composure in the frame
- clear subject/focus point

final exam planning

1. I will shoot everything as soon as possible. Hopefully this or next weekend.

2. My house. In the dining room.

3. How to throw a dinner party.

4. Pretty much just:

- costumes
- spaghetti
- camera
- tripod

5. The composure of this project will go as follows.

Its going to have a few steps about how to throw a proper dinner party. I'm going to incorporate a conservative amount of violence and weird stuff. Its going to be a few pictures explaining step one (serve dinner) and then a short video montage of spaghetti hitting a wall or something. And a similar theme will follow. The narration will be over the entirety of the piece.

OR

A murder dinner mystery. Like the movie Clue.

imovie preview

1. The video's and articles were mainly about the functions and diagnostics of iMovie. There are many ways to use iMovie; making short films, animation, slide shows and scrapbooking. We're going to be using the create function to prepare a presentation of photos and video that we shoot.

There are many functions of iMovie. Some of the include trimming clips, exporting photos, deleting sections, adding music, adding audio, etc. The tools allow amateur film makers to be creative. Us high school students are going to use iMovie to our full capability.

2. I knew that iMovie is software that allows the creator to make short videos.

3. I didn't know that pictures could be added into the movies.

4. I'm concerned my ideas are either going to be too boring or too weird.

5. I'm confident that I will have plenty ideas and plenty of photos to use ahead of time.

6. What I want to do for my video is serve dinner to all my friends, and have something about their clothing change throughout the movie.

opinions story

There are several ideas about changes in scheduling at Bowie High school for this upcoming 2016-2017 school year.

For Bowie students, there are two choices; one being that the bell schedule does not change and our ten late start days are no longer, or the first bell is changed to 8:50 and the last bell to 4:40 and we'll have FIT everyday.

Students and Staff have the option of going online and voting for which schedule alteration they think is best. I'm hoping that the voting doesn't turn into a high school political disaster.

Both options may seem equally less desirable than the schedule being practiced this year, but I have reason to disagree. The advantages that I can see are valuable.

Having ten late starts taken away is a way worse option than having to be at school for another 30 minutes with FIT everyday.

FIT is a wonderful time to do homework, socialize, and prepare for the rest of the day. Having FIT everyday and late start days is worth going to school for a ballpark of thirty minutes. Plus, the class periods would be close to the same time as they are now.

Not everyone thinks as positively as me about this option though. Some don't like FIT, its a short period of time and it may be hard for students to get focused. Late starts can be inconvenient for parents as well. Some have work and schedule their lives around ten weird days out of the year. On top of it all, students have to stay for, what they might think is a grueling, thirty more minutes.

There are many ups and downs of both options, so the schedule that eliminates the late starts and is shorter might also be a popular option.

Almost everything in life has a cost. Giving something up to get something else is what I'm choosing to side with to have FIT and late starts.

I just don't see how getting extra time for homework, as well as having a few fall back days to sleep in can be bad. The downsides of the option I'm going with are very minimal in comparison to the lack of advantages the other has to offer for Bowie students.

Its seems ungrateful to not appreciate FIT. Its about thirty minutes out of the day that we get to get things done. FIT has saved my grades multiple times.

Late starts are important when you have to cram the night before, or when there is a project that you forgot to do, or when you just want to plain stay up until 3 AM watching Buzzfeed videos. Those ten magical late starts are there to save you, to let you sleep in. Or, if you simply want to have breakfast with a few friends before being dropped off at jail.

In conclusion, the schedule at Bowie for the 2016-2017 school year should be changed in accordance to the option of FIT everyday, late starts, and a longer school day. The day may get longer, but this option presents more opportunities to get things done. As students, that should be our priority.

A. What do you think the major differences between a hard news story and an opinions piece? Come up with at least three.
  • the hard news stories are have no opinions whatsoever
  • the hard news stories follow the inverted pyramid more closely and diligently than the opinion pieces
  • the opinion pieces are written longer and more loosely, maybe for different kinds of enjoyment
B. Why do you think there aren't very many photos on this page?
There aren't many photos because the words that they use to describe the situation paint the perfect picture. Its easy to relate to the opinions of fellow students about things that are going on in our own lives too.

C. What are three topics you think would be good to write an opinions piece on?
  • Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump
  • the time changes and f.i.t. changes planned for next year at Bowie
  • the incentives

huntington story

At 10:00 PM in her California mobile home, 53 year old Janice Jones was shot in the leg when her dog knocked her 9mm handgun off the table.

The bullet went straight through Jones' leg, then through her automobile.

"It could have been worse," Rye said. "The bullet hit two inches from the gas tank."

Jones was transported to Huntington Beach Hospital by ambulance and was later transported Irvine Medical Center.

Jones' pomeranian, Tombo, who was malnourished and had fresh cigarette burns on its forehead; was taken in by Huntington Beach Animal Control officers.

"It could have gone with a little less abuse and few more of those pork chops," Ngo said.

Jones is to face quite a few charges; some of them include animal abuse, relation to the gun incident, and not having a permit for the gun.

If the reader is not interested in reading the story, it is the nutgraf that helps them determine that. The nutgraf tells the reader what the story is about to either keep them to continue reading, or show them that its not in their interest.

student of the month story

WHO - Clarissa Lopez
WHAT - Student of the Month
WHEN - this past month
WHERE - Bowie High school
WHY - because she was nominated by her peers STOM
HOW - she worked hard and was nominated

Student of the Month is a large campaign that is going on at Bowie High school. Junior, Clarissa Lopez, was nominated and won this past March.

Lopez was nominated for her gracious attitude, kind heart, excellent grades, and various other school related activities.

The STOM campaigns began when sophomore, Margaret Richardson, pitched the idea in November at a Peer Club meeting. She wanted to recognize students who do well academically, and are well liked by their peers.

"There are a lot of great people at Bowie," said Richardson, "but there are a few that I thought we could all celebrate."

Richardson took it up with the student council, who highly approved, and started upon the process of making Student of the Month campaigning happen.

"Margaret came to us and wanted to recognize students for being great, so we voted on whether or not to go through with it, and everyone voted for it." said Student Council President Marvin Harris.

This past March, the student council as well as the Peer Club calculated and chose five Bowie students with the best grades, and Lopez was one of them. In third for best grades, she had twenty four points, so she'd have to rack up in the next level of trials.

"I was confident," said friend Melanie Uribe, "I knew she had exquisite grades and a bunch of support."

After being nominated for her grades, the student ballads began. Bowie students vote between the five for kindness and friendliness. With 56 extra points from the ballads, Lopez had won.

"I was very surprised, but also very honored." said Lopez.

Lopez's family and friends supported her, and helped with the campaign process.

"Advertising her for SOTM was super fun," said Uribe, "we printed out huge posters of her face and GPA and put them all over the school."

Despite being her daughter, Lopez's mother, Carrie Lopez, shares her insight on how beloved she was by her peers.

"There was one time I remember at one of the Bowie volleyball games that she was recognized for playing even though she had sustained an injury," said mom Lopez, "the crowd cheered loud for her... that was when I knew."

Throughout the whole campaign, her friends had involved some major humor about having the best grades.

"They were supportive and kind, but there were lots of jokes made about it." said Lopez.

Good grades and heartfelt empathy is what got Lopez where she is.

"I'm happy to be a role model to my peers," said Lopez, "but it doesn't change a thing."

architecture preview

The Ufo House, Taiwan

1. The architect of the structures was Matti Suuronen.

2. The construction began in 1978, but was abandoned in 1980.

3. The structures were located in Sanzhi District, New Taipei City, Taiwan.

4. The buildings were demolished, so the remains are open to the public.

5. There is no information on how much the construction of these buildings cost.

6. They were intended as a vacation resort in a part of the northern coast adjacent to Tamsui, and were marketed towards U.S. Military officers coming from their East Asian postings.

7. I picked this collection of buildings because it was very interesting to me. This is because it was abandoned, it was colorful, and it didn't look like every other resort you see. I also really loved that it was from the 70's/80's. Retro stuff really hooks me. I just thought it was a splendid piece of architecture, and also that the story behind it's demolition was super morbid and cool.

Guggenheim Museum, Spain

1. The architect of this museum is Frank Gehry.

2. The construction began in 1993.

3. The museum is located in Bizkaia, Spain.

4. The building is open to the public.

5. The price of construction of the museum is 89 million dollars.

6. The museum was built to be something new, interesting, and daring. The randomness of the architecture is meant to catch the light and be interesting.

7. I chose this building it was an interesting shape, and it had a spider out front. I thought that the color was bland, but once I saw the spider, I was intrigued. The water and the bridge also interested me. Any architecture that had water surrounding it is what I like.

The Longaberger Company (The Basket Building), United States

1. The architect of this building is a firm called NBBJ.

2. The construction began in 1995 and ended in 1997.

3. The basket is located in Newark, Ohio, United States.

4. The building is not open to the public, it is a work place and a company that makes baskets.

5. The construction price is not specified.

6. The basket building was made to be the home of the Longaberger Company. The company makes baskets and distributes them.

7. I chose this one because its a basket! Its so cute and the scenery is beautiful. Its surrounded by pretty roses and trees. The land is well kept, and the best part is, the stuff they make inside the basket, is baskets!

The Nautilus House, Mexico

1. The architect of this unique home is Javier Senosiain of Arquitectura Organica.

2. This house was built in 2007

3. The house is located in Mexico City, Mexico.

4. The house is not open to the public. It is inhabited by a family of four.

5.

sensory overload

1. I think the statement is very relevant and wise.

I agree with the statement, in that the blatant definition of the environment is definitely has a lot more meaning than we all think.

This statement makes me feel like there is a lot more that I can do, creatively, with my photography.

2. When I looked through the photos, it did make me want to be there and take pictures. The colors and objects were so unique and vibrant.

3. I think it would be interesting to be the child of someone who worked in one of these places, because it would intrigue me to see who walked in to these stores.

4. My favorite store room was the one with full-body mannequins that lined the walls. There are hangers on the back wall, and the register is to the right.

3. This is a key moment. This is something that happens after most sports wins. It could have been planned.

4. There is great composition, the rule of thirds is evident, its balanced, and the camera is focused.

lone star dispatch issue #4

FRONT PAGE
1. A new policy for transfers takes effect

This story was about the transfer policy that will be taking effect in the upcoming 2016-2017 school year. The transfer policy is to only accept enough students that there is space for. Some of the kids on transfers might have to go to different schools.

Who? Bowie students
What? A new transfer policy that would affect AISD high schools
When? 2016-2017 school year
Where? AISD high schools, Bowie High School
Why? To reduce over crowding
How? Making the student population more even among all AISD high schools
Andri Lyons, Jessica Torrez, and Michaela Gero were all quoted.
Michaela Gero's quote was the strongest in my opinion.
The lead sentence was interesting, but the title is really what caught me.
The conclusion was a statement.

STUDENT LIFE
2. Reaching the perfect balance

The article was mainly about Bowie student, Bryana Johnson, and how she manages to get a step ahead in life as a pre-adult. Bryana has two jobs, good grades, already has college in the near future, and on top of it all, makes time for family. She wants to go to Texas A&M and get a marketing education. She doesn't let school or stress get to her, and is humbly inspiring.

Who? Bryana Johnson and other seniors
What? Getting ready for the future, and managing time and money
When? Before college
Where? Bowie, the real world
Why? To get an advantage for college and for life
How? Making smart decisions, working jobs, being dedicated
Bryana Johnson, Annalisa Gonzalez, Amy Lopez, and Taylor Beltz were all quoted.
The strongest quote in the article was Johnson's when she denied being an inspiration.
The lead sentence really did catch my attention, and made me think about my own future as I was reading.
The conclusion was a quote.

NEWS
3. FFA take T.C.Y.S. by a storm

The article is mainly about the success that Bowie FFA students had at the Travis County Youth Show on January 14th-16th. Many students won awards for the showing of their animals and hope to do well next year too. A lot of the students also have positive outlooks on the loss of an animal. Kylee Rhorer sees it as a way to become less attached and not seeing all animals as pets.

Who? FFA participants
What? TCYS, a competition for the Future Farmers of America
When? January 14th through the 16th
Where? Travis County
Why? To practice the showing and production of animals to be slaughtered
How? By coming and showing off the animals who win awards for coat and size
Kylee Rhorer, Jamie Muras, Brandon Parker, and Kate Buning were quoted.
The strongest quote was Kylee Rhorer's. She spoke about the optimistic aspect of losing an FFA animal.
The lead sentence didn't hook me in, but the overall subject was interesting.
The conclusion was a statement.

ATHLETICS
4. Sophomore black belt fights her way to a top ranking

This article is about the martial artists at Bowie. Bowie sophomore, Lily Ang, is a black belt at 15 years old and is highly respected by her peers. One of said peers, Riley Murphy, is a sophomore who looks up to Ang. Ang's martial arts instructor talks about Ang and who she is to deserve her black belt.

Who? Martial artists at Bowie
What? Martial arts and good morals
When? recently
Where?
Why? To better one's self and mind
How? Hard work, dedication, and a toga
Lily Ang, Barbara King, Riley Murphy, Lily's mom (Alicia), and Bella Cumminato are all quoted.
The strongest quote was Lily's mom's when she was talking about how Lily once had to do 400 pushups.
The leading sentence really did hook me.
The conclusion was a quote.

ENTERTAINMENT
5. Sweet sounds of the steel drums

The article focuses on the steel drums program that we have here at Bowie. The article features information about the class, the music, and the students that participate. The participants really enjoy it and so do the students that hear it outside their class.

Who? The Bowie steel drums students
What? The Bowie steel drums program
When? currently
Where? Bowie high school, a portable out back
Why? to acknowledge the bowie steel drums and not just the band students
How? anyone can sign up, just put it on the choice sheet
Amy Suggs, Crosby LaGrone, and Jake Wohleb were all quoted.
The strongest quote was Crosby LaGrone's when she explained how jealous she was, and how cool steel drums are.
The leading sentence did hook me a little bit, but what really drew me in was the pictures and the title.
The conclusion was a quote.

COMMENTARY
6. Questions arise as Avery is charged for murder

intro to newspaper design

1. My favorite news front page was "The Irish Times."

2. The "Return to Paris: Eagles of Death Metal perform again in French capital" headline was my favorite. I was interested because I am an avid music lover and I saw a drum set and guitar in the photo.

3. There are four major stories on the front page.

4. All of the news covers have a large title, one large photo, some stories, some quotes to the side, and sometimes an advertisement section at the bottom.

5. A lot of the variation in the covers was dependent on the region it came from. For example, a cover from Japan is in a different language, has WAY more text, smaller pictures. However, a cover from the United States or Europe has lots of color and big text.

yearbook introduction

  1. The yearbook that I looked at is called Identity.
  2. It is from Aberdeen High School.
  3. There are not very many thematic elements in this yearbook, the fonts and colors schemes change. The ones that are evident though are that somethings are in color and some black and white, the photos are in these rectangular boxes, and there's a lot of this one ugly font.
  4. In my book, there are like five sections of student photos, and then the rest are just photos and articles about student life. It switches between the two about five times.
  5. My favorite spread is called "Cut Off" on page 26.
  6. There is an index at the end of the yearbook.
  7. There are photos of groups of people. Not really clubs, just groups of friends and what they do on the weekend or whatever. When there is a spread of a club or something it seems to be only one person mentioned or photographed.
  8. There is a small table of context on the second page at the beginning. Very minimal.
  9. There are about one thousand people that went to that school that year.
  10. This yearbook is from Aberdeen, Washington.

25 THINGS THAT EVERY YEARBOOK NEEDS:

  • a good color scheme
  • themed font
  • re-occuring shapes
  • re-occuring styles of format
  • index at the end
  • table of contents
  • enrollment count
  • address of the school
  • big strong title on the front
  • well composed spreads and photos
  • distinct sections (students, student life, sports, school spirit)

magazine cover peer review

1.)

http://emanuelphotojournalism.blogspot.com/2016_01_01_archive.html

1. The name of the magazine is Savor Freedom. It was made by Emanuel.

2. Two things that I like about the cover is that the photo is funny, I also like the cover lines. It's all amusing to me.

3. I think something that could improve the magazine cover is to improve the theme of colors and fonts.

4. I really liked the cover image. It drew my eyes to it because the photo is of this guy running and he's in the air and nothing is really focused.

5. There is a bar code, it is a bit big and touching the outer edge, so not quite right.

6. I would not pick up this magazine, because the colors are rather uncomfortable to look at.

7. This was a self portrait, because it was more far away, and was an action shot.

2.)

http://clarissalopez1d.blogspot.com/2016/01/magazine-covers.html

1. The name of the magazine is Madhouse Central Magazine. It was made by Clarissa Lopez.

2. Two things that I like about the magazine cover is that the face the subject is making is really funny, and that one of the cover lines says "New Faces 2016." It's funny.

3. I think that the placement of the cover lines is what could be improved on.

4. I picked this cover because I thought the face she's making is interesting. I also thought it was super unsettling and that sort of made me want to do it more.

5. There is a bar code, and no it is not formatted correctly, its too big and also not really on the page.

6. I would not pick up this magazine. The title is not bold enough or strong enough to get me to be attracted to it.

7. I can't really tell if this is the portrait or self portrait because both photos were taken in the same place, the same way. They are very similar, so its hard to tell.

3.)

http://bonniesphotojournal.blogspot.com/2016/01/magazine-covers.html

1. The name of the magazine is Soccer Weekly. It was made by Bonnie.

2. I really liked how much the themes were accurate, and that the title popped because of the red.

3. The cover lines could have popped more.

4. I picked this cover because it was very satisfying to the eye.

5. There is a barcode and it is a little big, but it looks good in comparison to the font size and placement of other stuff.

6. I might pick this up in Barnes and Noble, its well composed and the title pops out. Its very nice.

7. This is the portrait. I can tell because the boy looks young, and Bonnie is a girls name (as much as it sucks that names are dependent on gender, Bonnie is not yet a boys name. IT SHOULD BE THOUGH.)

prompt shoot peer review

http://biancasphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com/2016/01/prompt-shoot-3.html

1. I like the flower photo the best. I like it because its well composed and the colors are beautiful.

2. My least favorite photo is the Pose photo. I don't really like it as much because it is out of focus and kind of unsatisfying to the eye.

3. Two positive things about the photos are that most of the photos are in focus and follow the prompt.

4. One thing that can be improved upon is that some of the photos do not follow the prompt.

5. The Pose photo follows the prompt well. It is a girl posing in the photo.

6. I think the Yummy photo followed the prompt the least. I mean... if you're into eating flowers, its pretty accurate.

winter break recap

1. One thing that was exciting for me during the holiday was that I got a lot of time to practice music, paint, give gifts, and meditate. I enjoyed the relaxation and it was nice to be able to spend my time how I wanted to.

2. I haven't set any resolutions for 2016, but if  I were to, I would try to exercise more and eat sugar less. I have a generally healthy diet, but I could lose ten pounds (not that I care).

3. I am looking forward to new music in 2016. My band is releasing a mini-LP or EP album in a few months, and we're organizing a few gigs which is exciting.

the best of 2015

BEST SONG OF 2015

a heart like hers - mac demarco

I think that Mac Demarco is easily on of my favorite musicians, his music is extremely fun to listen to. I really loved his new album, and my favorite song is called 'a heart like hers'. Demarco wanted to go with a love-song themed album in 2015 and succeeded in my opinion.

BEST MOVIE OF 2015

star wars - george lucas

Star Wars is a phenomenal movie series, one of the all time greats for being produced in the early 70's. I've haven't seen the movie, but from what I know about J. J. Abrams and the new story, Star Wars The Force Awakens is the best movie released in 2015.

MOST IMPORTANT NEWS STORY OF 2015

same-sex marriage legalization

The legalization of same-sex marriage was a wonderful milestone this past year. The views and fighting of many was to thank for the sharing of love. I think this is the most important news story of 2015 because in 100 years, the people of Earth and the United States will be able to look back in awe at how unaccepting we all were.

MOST IMPORTANT PERSON OF 2015

bernie sanders - presidential candidate

In my opinion, Bernie Sanders is the most important person of 2015 because he has awesome hopes for the United States. I'm excited for the results of the election and I hope he wins. Bernie wants to make college education more attainable for people who have economic trouble, change minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour, have economic equality for men and women in the workplace, and legalize marijuana. I am REALLY hoping that Bernie Sanders becomes President.
